How Would You Feel If Your Normal Average School Day Was Extended?

The extending of school day has already been rolled out in the US across some schools where the day has increased to 10 hours. This has seen some dramatic improvements in results for the students at the schools and has really helped improve teaching quality.

Following on from this evidence of extending the school day, the UK wants to roll this out across all UK schools by 2012. Some underprivileged schools have already seen an increase in the percentage of their students going into further education from 10% to 80% and therefore this change is seen as being crucial for the development of students within the UK and to encourage students to go into further education to improve their job prospects and allow them to have a wider range of opportunities to explore.

Although the extended school day is likely to help the students gain access to the resources that they need as well as the additional support they require from their tutors, the idea of extending the school day from around 8 hours to 10 hours a day has not seen a positive universal approval as of yet as there are debates going round and some parents feel that their children already come home feeling tired so a 10 hour day might just completely increase the pressure they feel.

At the same time, some parents feel that their parenting skills are being questioned and the extended school day is coming into force because they can’t raise their kids properly.

On the positive side, you can argue that some parents will be relieved to hear this news, especially if they are already finding it hard to find childcare, the extended school day will mean that they will be able to get home in good time before their children and therefore the need for extended childcare may not be necessary.

The extended school day doesn’t mean curriculum lessons till late. It just means that additional support classes will be available under supervision to students who require further training. At the same time, it doesn’t mean that teachers will have to stay till late to accommodate the 10 hour day because external recruitment will be done in order to accommodate the additional hours that will be required for the various subjects that will be covered.
